Survey Shows Practitioners Are Looking for Additional Guidance on Using the TOGAF® Standard

Practicing Enterprise Architects believe TOGAF®, a standard of The Open Group, continues to be well-suited to helping organizations develop the business and IT infrastructures they need to align their business strategies, organizational structures, and capabilities. However, TOGAF users are increasingly looking for additional guidance and industry specific use cases regarding how to use the standard in conjunction with new IT trends—such as Agile development and artificial intelligence—and to address digital and business transformation efforts.

Design Thinking for Enterprise Architects – A Conversation with Mayank Saxena

The concept of Design Thinking is all the rage these days in certain circles—particularly in MBA programs and in the tech industry. But what is Design Thinking and why should businesses make it a consideration? And what does it have to do with Enterprise Architecture?

Mayank Saxena, Enterprise Architect at ABM AMRO Bank in The Netherlands, believes Enterprise Architects can learn a lot from the lessons of Design Thinking—lessons that could give Enterprise Architects greater influence and value within their organizations. We spoke with Mr.Saxena in advance of The Open Group Singapore 2019 to learn more about the concept of Design Thinking and how Enterprise Architects can benefit from it.

The State of Artificial Intelligence and Need for Standards: A Conversation with Syed Husain

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a lot of promise, but it is still in the hype phase. Although strides have been made in machine learning and cognitive computing, most practical applications for AI are still nascent. As such, this is the right time to begin developing AI standards that can address some of the issues that have already been identified with AI, such as potential bias and the ethical concerns behind the technology, so that business value can be maximized.

Syed Husain, Manager Enterprise Architecture for Accenture, examined these topics at The Open Group London event in April 2018. In this far-reaching conversation, we spoke with Husain about where AI stands today, what the ultimate promise of AI is and the value standards may be able to bring to this still-emerging technology.

“Enterprise Architecture As A Service” – Why?

The previous TOGAF® User Group meeting was held by The Open Group was held in London on April 18, 2018. In that meeting a number of very interesting questions were asked by the attendees. One topic in question was “Enterprise Architecture As A Service (EA As A Service)” – was “EA As A Service” considered possible, and/or useful? Great questions!

How the TOGAF® Standard Enables Agility

The Open Group TOGAF Standard Version 9.2 was published April 16, 2018. A common misconception voiced by several people at that time was that Enterprise Architecture in general and the TOGAF Standard are barriers to enterprise agility.

This paper addresses that misconception by reference to specific sections of the standard; it does not assume the adoption of any specific agile method.

Speaking of the TOGAF® Library

I was delighted to attend another one of The Open Group TOGAF® User Group meetings. This one was held in London on April 18, 2018 with great interactions between users of the TOGAF Standard, experts, and staff of The Open Group. Attendees got that chance to Share experiences, be Enlightened by news, and Engage in the development process by expressing needs – i.e. to SEE TOGAF a little differently.

The Importance of Enterprise Architecture for Business Transformation: Lessons Learned

In a 2016 blog for The Open Group, we described what really happens when IT is run like a business based upon our recent work at SKF, where we work as Enterprise Architects and IT Strategists. We explained how we became confident to transform the way IT worked with the business to provide value, and what lessons we are learning during our transformation journey. Enterprise Architecture (EA) has been instrumental in that journey, and in this article, we provide some valuable lessons that we have learned on our journey to build an Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) function to support our digital transformation, and how we used EAM to become and remain relevant during digital disruption.

The IT4IT™ Standard – What is all the fuss about? Isn’t it just an architecture after all?

In October 2015, The Open Group launched a new standard, The Open Group IT4IT™ Reference Architecture, and I personally feel this may have been one of the biggest events when it comes to the history of IT. At last, IT is starting to really mature! Let me tell you why I have this view.
