In this time of the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated extreme economic disruption we’re all experiencing, the imperative to move rapidly toward digital products and business models is becoming both clear and increasingly urgent.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Open Group will host its upcoming virtual event (which was originally planned to take place face-to-face in Mumbai, India) on April 27 – 29, 2020. As an organization that prides itself on bringing people together globally, it is important to us that we continue to do so during these uncertain times. Everyone’s health and safety are the key priorities. The Open Group has planned for the virtual event to be conducive to time zones across the globe.
Recently, the Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) published version 8.0 of its financial industry reference architecture. This provides a comprehensive model of the business capabilities, business scenarios, service domains and business objects used in banking and other financial services.
The Open Group hosted its latest event at the Marriott Riverwalk in the lively city of San Antonio, Texas. On January 27 – 30, we welcomed attendees from across the globe – including decision-makers, Enterprise Architects, Data Scientists, engineers, technologists, and end-users representing many businesses and governments – to explore how organizations can utilize their growing volume of data effectively and securely as part of a digital transformation program.

As we usher in the new decade, I would like to express my sincerest wishes for you – our valued Members, The Open Group global community, and staff – to enjoy much happiness and great success in 2020.
What a year it has been here at The Open Group! As I reflect on 2019 and consider what is to come in 2020, one thing is very clear – The Open Group is doing even more of what it does best – helping to solve real business problems through technology standards.
The Open Group, the vendor-neutral technology standards consortium, is hosting its upcoming event in Amsterdam, November 4 – 7, 2019. The Open Group Amsterdam 2019 will bring together vendors and end user organizations to discuss a range of topics focused around a central theme of Agile Architecture. The event will host attendees from throughout the globe, including decision-makers, Enterprise Architects, engineers, technologists, and end-users representing many businesses and governments.
The Professional Petroleum Data Expo was held April in Houston by the Professional Petroleum Data Management Association (PPDM). This conference is one of several events this spring where The Open Group Open Subsurface Data Universe™ (OSDU) Forum unveiled a new standard in development that will facilitate movement of oil and gas company exploration, production, and wells data from in-house IT systems to cloud services.
The Open Group was a sponsor of the event, and had a presence in the exhibition hall. There was a steady stream of attendees with questions about the Open Subsurface Data Universe Forum, and about the emerging standard.
Two years ago, a group of companies from seemingly disparate industries met in San Francisco to discuss the possibility of creating an open standard for process automation. With 30 different companies in attendance at that first meeting, the group quickly recognized the commonalities among them and the need for more flexible manufacturing solutions. Soon after, they launched the Open Process Automation™ Forum (OPAF) under the auspices of The Open Group® to begin work toward developing a standard that would address the common pain points manufacturers in process automation face today.
For many of us, each new year is an occasion to look back at the previous year’s accomplishments, as well as look forward to what’s to come over the course of the next year. For the past three years since I took over the reins as CEO of The Open Group, I’ve made it a tradition to take advantage of the new year to do just this, as I’m sure many of you do both in your professional and personal lives.
With the passing of each year, I’m always struck not only by how quickly it goes by, but how many new opportunities arise throughout the year for The Open Group that none of us ever could have predicted. What’s nice for me, from where I sit, is that there is no shortage of new opportunities for us as an organization to do what we’ve always done—to help organizations come together to solve their business problems through open standards.
In the past four years, the acceptance and uptake of Enterprise Architecture as an integrated and holistic approach to better citizen services and Digital Transformation in the Government and the public sector has been notable and significant.
Last month, Digital India had a significant milestone. The India Enterprise Architecture Framework, aptly called IndEA, was formally notified by the Government of India as a national standard. Needless to mention, for me the journey from development to notification has been challenging and extremely fulfilling at the same time, both at a professional and personal level. Ever since the success of ePragati in Andhra Pradesh, many Ministries, States, Departments, and other public sector entities have shown growing interest in enterprise architecture. The elevation and notification of IndEA as a national standard is absolutely a move in the right direction to accentuate and accelerate such activities.
On Monday, October 29, The Open Group kicked off the final event of 2018 in Singapore. The theme of the event is ‘Managing Digital Enterprises’. Set in the magnificent InterContinental Singapore hotel, Steve Nunn, President and CEO of The Open Group, opened proceedings in front of an international audience with attendees from 24 countries including Belgium, India, Japan, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

The Open Group Houston 2018 – Digital Transformation in the Energy Industry – will bring together vendors and end user organizations to discuss the development of standards-based and interoperable architecture, with a particular focus on technical and business issues for process automation.
