Data Integration – Choosing the Right Approach

By Dr. Chris Harding, Founder and Principal of Lacibus Ltd.

How do you approach data integration?

While it is often done on a case-by-case basis, a recent survey of enterprise and solution architects by The Open Group found that 62% of organisations are using or planning to use a specific data integration approach such as data virtualisation, data fabric, or data mesh. How would you pick the right approach for your organisation?

Questions like this are not best answered “off the top of your head”. You want to understand how the different approaches would work in your particular situation. You want to read explanations of them, and case studies. You want to talk to people with similar problems, see what they are doing or have done, and how this compares with what you want to do. You want to be able to follow standards and best practices.

Competing in The Age of AI

As someone who cares about how business strategy and digital intersect, it is great to see complementary validations of business thinking. This is what I found after reading “Competing in The Age of AI”, released on January 6, 2020. The book’s authors extend and compliment “Designed for Digital” which was reviewed in September.  Maybe the authors should take a walk across the Charles River.

In Competing in the Age of AI, authors Marco Iansiti and Karim Lakhani dig into the role of data and AI in driving the digital future. Their perspectives provide additional and supportive thinking from Designed for Digital.

Agility within The Open Group

What an exciting event in the city of Denver, Colorado the week of July 22, 2019! If you were at this conference you would probably have noticed the breadth and depth of work happening in The Open Group and, as well, noticed the impact it is having throughout various industries. A lot of really great stuff is going on thanks to those members working on real issues best addressed through collaboration! Kudos to the Members!!

One of the things I heard from some Members, expressed as a “potential” issue, was work being done that might be considered overlapping. Specifically referenced was TOGAF® Architecture Development Method, the Digital Practitioner Body of Knowledge™ (DPBok) Standard, and Snapshot of The Open Group Agile Architecture Framework™ Standard. After giving this some thought I felt compelled to present the optimistic view of this based on my experience with The Open Group over three decades!
