Enterprise (Artificial) Architecture

If you think back to Greek mythology, an Oracle was a person who provides wise counsel, prophetic predictions, or precognition of the future (as summarized from Wikipedia). So, it is somehow fitting that Oracle, the company, is the first to drive Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) so broadly and deeply into our services. This push allows you to become your own oracle to drive insights, predictions, and customer/employee/partner interactions in ways that will pull you ahead of your competition.

AI/ML are game-changing technologies (and have finally come of age) that you need to plan and leverage your Enterprise Architecture for customer and competitive value. If you thought the tsunami of change brought by Cloud Computing was big, get ready. The move to Cloud Computing was merely an enabling step to AI which will come just as fast and be just as consequential to business, if not more so in the long run. The reason this is happening now is the culmination of Oracle's generally available GPUs for AI-compute power, massive data storage/retrieval, and access to core AI/ML capabilities. The move to Cloud allowed your company to divest itself of owning/running infrastructure, platforms, and software. AI/ML will allow you to automate manual, slow, and error-prone activities so that you can focus on creativity and business excellence.

Generally, AI should be positioned in your Enterprise Architecture to:

  • Automate as much as possible with the understanding that there is a point where human creativity and interaction can't be replaced.
  • Provide better and faster analytics and decision making.
  • Provide vastly better user, customer, employee, and partner experience/interaction.
  • Develop and deploy applications/services faster and more reliably than ever before.
  • Leverage for new, creative, differentiating services that could never exist before.

In terms of architecture, you should look not only at the cost of implementing AI, but the business risk of *not* implementing this technology. You should also think in advance, asking yourself how your Enterprise Architecture can accommodate the following questions:

  • How can you use AI to offer differentiated services more quickly?
  • How can you build applications that offer deeper insights and more personal experiences?
  • What can I do with Autonomous – defined as AI/ML/self-something? – in my company that was impossible before, that your competition would fear now, or our customers will be delighted by?

Luckily, Oracle recently made a series of announcements about how deeply and broadly AI will be imbued in our Cloud Services which will immediately answer some of the questions listed above. Of course, people who have been to Open World, or generally keeping an eye on things, will remember that we announced the world's first self-driving or Autonomous database (read press release here) to drive up productivity, lower risk, and speed up decision making. Another article goes on to explain how Oracle will provide Autonomous services across the entire platform (read here). The key message is that Oracle is extending Autonomous capabilities by making all our Cloud Platform Services self-driving, self-securing, and self-repairing. This will enable organizations to lower costs, reduce risk, accelerate innovation, and get better predictive insights. 

Finally, this Forbes article, "Oracle Extends Autonomous Capabilities Across Its Entire Cloud Platform," does a good job of explaining why AI is suddenly so important and what has changed to make it viable right now as an enabler in business systems.

In closing, it’s a very safe bet to focus some of your attention on how to leverage AI/Autonomous computing right now. Do so before your competition because the first one to do it will be the first one to reap the rewards of reduced cost and risk while enjoying the benefits of speed, insight, and differentiation.
