In part 13 of “Memoirs of an Enterprise Architect” I discussed Database Rationalization. This week I will talk about how to make strategic business decisions.
Do you feel like you have enough information to make critical strategic business decisions?
Throughout this blog series I have talked about where to get the information you need to make these decisions and how to do it. So if you have been following along you now have a good handle on how to do this. Below I will review the high level steps to get to this point:
- Assemble a cross-functional team of 6-8 people representing every area within your organization.
- Identify the top 10 business questions that executive management within your organization is asking.
- Identify all of the information required to answer these questions.
- Identify the sources of record for all of this information.
- Create the reference data model encompassing all of the objects, relationships, and properties necessary to obtain from each data source.
- Assess your organization against your reference data model and document the gaps.
- Create policies and processes to address the gaps and ensure data correctness as well as completeness.
- Integrate the data sources with Troux and start feeding it all of the data.
At this point you have a robust Enterprise Architecture and Portfolio Management solution that is full of quality data with which to make key business decisions.
Have you been able to transform your organization successfully? If not, what are you waiting for? Follow the 8 Steps above and be surprised.
See you next week, same time, same place where I will wrap up this 15 part blog series.
