@pelujan The importance of managing Enterprise Debt #entarch

I’m seeing a growing CxO level demand for removing unwanted complexity and increase business response to change (agility) in IT and business operations with my clients. They’re frustrated by the lack of visibility of the structural (archive rural) aspects of their business and often feel they’re making decisions without the full picture. It seems to me that they need a simple ‘dashboard’ for understanding the Enterprise Debt profile and how to reduce rather than increase unwanted complexity. Maybe this approach would, if kept as simple as possible, would help create the attention needed to obtain repeat value from an Enterprise knowledge base focused on managing Enterprise Debt. I suspect that the key to this will be the rigorous selection of artefacts that can be measured by simple metrics that show the Enterprise Debt ‘balance’ and the degree to which new projects credit or debit that balance. Unwanted complexity lives in many parts of the organisation, IT, Business Processes, Client Contracts, Business Semantics, Department/Organisational structures, Policies and current Departmental Objectives/Charters. These need to be understood in context of each other to successfully manage Enterprise Debt and to create a decision-making platform that increases the chances of value-adding, emergent, behaviour. I fear without such a platform, so called ‘agile and lean’ practices, fuelled by quick-to-adopt Cloud technologies, will continue to accelerate Enterprise Debt.
