From In The Business of Technology
Just came across a nice little provocative argument from Pankaj Ghemawat of IESE Business School Barcelona. He writes in his latest HBR article titled, “Who’s Afraid of a Few Big Companies Taking Over the World“. While I understand the principles which Pankaj is outlining I must say
that this is a broad generalisation which does not work when applied to
specific verticals and market-places. For example here in UK the impact
of large global retail organisations on local market-places and buying
habits are immense. The UK High Street as we know here is coming under
lot of pressure as small local businesses can not compete with large
MNCs with deep pockets. To pick another example, large online global
book, media and apparel retailers are slowly and gradually killing
number of local commerce ecosystems. I think Pankaj’s argument may work
to some extent for manufacturing and engineering sector but again I can
think of examples where it does not.
