On Stupidity – Industrialisation

When I am talking about stupidity on Industrialisation I want to clearly point out that industrialisation is not stupid, it is more how we deal with Industrialisation. Most people will tell us that industrialisation is something that happened hundred years ago and something that is no longer done. While it is true that industrialisation started over hundred years ago it has so far only been applied to a very small section of industry. Usually that small section is found in mass production of goods.

The real industrialisation of the last forty years happened for example in IT departments or accounting and now it will hit many industries such as banking and insurance. The reason for industrialisation is that we cannot fully digitalise any business before we have not industrialised it. This is why you will usually find many separate IT products in non industrialised areas that require human interfaces between functions. So industrialisation will still go on for another century and as long as industrialisation has not been concluded digitalisation will not be concluded either.

This is something very important for architects to understand as it represents one of the main constraints in our work and unless you work in an complete industrialised area you will always have to remember this before trying and being frustrated about the progress of your own work.
