I am not aware if you know much of London, especially about the city of London that only covers the central square mile. The city has the most interesting way to be governed, as while every person living there (these are virtually nil) also all the businesses have a vote. The mayor and the two sheriff of London however, who are voted in however all put forward and must belong to the livery companies in the city. Livery companies are professional bodies and there is even one called the Worshipful Company of IT Professionals. Many of the older companies such as the Gunmaker or Musician are however today more of a charitable club with a bit of politics on the side. You can usually also still get a nice title that way.
Now I made a little thought experiment in opening up all the livery companies and just thinking to which one architects working in the non construction side would be best attached. So the first two choices were the aforementioned Worshipful Company of IT Professionals or the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects. But both choices were clearly to common, so I counted to look deeper especially on the by now extinct trades such as haymakers or wood clockmakers. There is a quite interesting list of livery companies that today are usually no longer looking after the trade they once represented. So this is when I encountered the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters and while I know what they actually once did, found it an excellent description of what we as non construction architects are doing. So what do you think, have a look?
