For me it is always astonishing to see the tendency of passing the buck, as well as to switch off any thinking. I often see many architects arguing with an Analyst report instead of using their own reasoning, usually this happens most with enterprise, business and solution architects or all those architects that help in the decision process of investments. Do not get me wrong here analysis and reading analysts report can be helpful as long as you still use your own head, but you will rarely find someone who will say that the recommends an action based on the opposite view of the analysis of G****. Instead in that cases the analysis is not mentioned.
The cause that we often use analyst opinion as the baseline for decisions is found in the way that we are educated at university, as we are used to first describe the all the work of others in the field before asserting our own opinion. While this is important when you start you start your working life, you need to change this once you get more experienced in your field as you will otherwise not develop beyond the average in your field.
The real danger on following analysts are the trends they are suggesting. In most cases the trends can quickly be bold down into some marketing slogans that only contain hot air without any substance. This is often also the reason that most smart companies will try to feed analysts with the same marketing jargon often packaged in the cloud of higher understanding. These trends then often become a kind of spiritual truth that you need to understand to reach a higher level of understanding in the eyes of your peers. However these kinds of levels in understanding while being a smart way to manipulate are dangerous for most as they just disable our thinking.
