On Stupidity – Transparency

Lately I was invited to a conference of executive business leaders where the conference was about Information as a weapon and that you should not deliver it in same way as you will not deliver a loaded guns that will be used to kill you. There are funny enough even several books on this that specify how you can show others that you are a champion on transparency and in reality keep all the good data for yourself just to use it in front of others to foster your own career. By we openly writing about this you will see that I am not a big fan of such teachings, but it puts a dent on transparency.

Transparency is something that I often find a story boards and on board meetings ,but which is often meant to be delivered by other people to more easily destabilise them. However companies with such an attitude have the tendency not to do too well, but managers with this attitude do well. As you have seen in the past economic crisis you will see that all those that hoard and suppress information are usually amongst the ones that benefit most this will likely to continue. Transparency in terms of companies is usually coded into compliance (not equal to compliance) and is only working well if the market is subdued. Once the you get a bearish market you will then hear about a lot of self regulation with transparency the poorer.

Transparency also usually only works well if there are no information that can be turned into a weapon. So often transparency does also not exist because there is nothing to make transparent 😉
