On Stupidity – Governance

So why could governance be stupid? Governance is always good and the only problems arise if it is done in the wrong way.

This is usually what you get once you start challenging governance. However we often forget that governance is only in place because of missing trust. If you argue for building more trust, empowerment, up skilling and efficiency governance becomes often a hindrance. So you might argue that you could do governance on a voluntary basis. That however if it is really voluntary will not work as every additional task on any project is something that project managers will kill or have to kill and once you tell them not to do that the voluntary part goes south.

So now we usually arrive at the cross road of pushing on quality and standards versus trust and productivity and usually in the past quality and standard usually won. So why should we change this now? The problem with breaking the trust is that it works as long as you have a relative easy supply on new young staff that is hungry to earn money. However this supply is drying up as we are moving into an ageing society and a trend of ICT jobs not being seen as a favourable career.

So when you instead need to employ much older staff where respect and trust is more important than the pay (older folks usually spend far less) you will need to change. Additional the ageing also means that higher profits are only tenable via higher productivity, as you can no longer rely on growth and synergies. So as a result governance as we know it today will change to more of a convincing of ideas solely on thought leadership.
