There are many frameworks out there describing on how to architect an enterprise, but today I want to concentrate on what is really required for any enterprise or organisation at any level. So what is the the actual nucleus of how an organisation works?
- First we describe of what we do today, usually this is reflected in Business Processes. some call it actuality or the as is state. I usually like to call the the Origin, but regardless of what you call it I will just refer to it as Number One.
- Second is what we ought to do today with todays resources and constraints. So this is what people will refer to counties development or as capabilities. It is that bit of the organisation that you want to push in tactical management and the area where you can get the highest gains. This is why most enterprises will focus their enterprise and business architects in this area.
- Third is what we ought to be doing by developing resources and removing constraints, although still operating within the bonds of what is already known and feasible. This area is usually referred to as potentiality or corporate development. This is an area where especially in the removing of constraints architects are often employed.
- Fourth is where we might develop to disregarding existing resources and constraints. This is usually referred as disruptive change or blue ocean. When a company decided to do this usually outside consultants and architects are used to build up this area as it works outside of the existing constraints.
No a strategy will define which of these areas will be get special attention and describe the direction.
The performance of the enterprise can be most fundamentally be described by two measurements. The first is the productivity that is made made up by the the first two areas I described before, whereas the Latency that we also call the time to market is represented by the two later.
So as long as all the complex systems we create to describe our enterprise follow this basic concept they are usually OK, just be aware of those that go in depth about one or two concepts I have mentioned, but are forgetting the other areas mentioned.
