On Stupidity – BYOD

You will often hear and read many articles on BYOD and I will not start in a rehearsal of those arguments. Usually most articles in this areas are lanced by professionals that make money with solutions in those areas.

The other real strange part on BYOD is that it only enters around ICT and that we forget that all professions have had to decide on BYOD policies for the last thousand years. So in my opinion the BYOD discussion should be lead by that vast knowledge learned in other ares instead of reinventing everything in the ICT and making the same mistakes.

A good example is the use of tools in high precision engineering, where many engineers hundred years ago argued for BYOD as the engineers own their own gear would look better after it. The reality however turned out that only some would look after the tools with others keeping the tools in a really bad condition once they were the only once locking after them.  The problem then started when people using excellent tools and others with bad tools would work together. Other example also include liability and quality control that all have a really long history of BYOD outside of ICT.

So when we start to look at BYOD it is madness to do so in a ICT isolated way, instead ICT should follow the policies set out by other areas.
