On Stupidity – HCM

Human Capital Management was coined after the word of Human Resources got a bad name and is a classical example that just changing the name will not create any real change. During my work I have too often seen many self styled HCM expert architects who did not even understand the high level business process of Hire to Retire (H2R) that is key for all HCM architecture. Instead they were often talking endlessly of inventing processes that have been established for a long time. If you are interested in the H2R process please go to my audio archive where you will find it in the first two podcasts on standard business architecture that I have recorded about six years ago.

Therefore on HCM it is important to concentrate to do service improvements on the standard instead of trying to reinvent something. The real problem in this are is usually that of integration of systems to ensure that the H2R process is kept together while at the same time using the best tools to execute it. Therefore key areas of stupid ways are usually in implementing it all in one system, as so far I have not seen a system that is good at the recruiting sub processing, the staff on boarding sub process, the benefit presentation to staff sub process, the benefit administration sub process, the personal development sub process and so on. The second key failing is that most HCM systems are implemented for the benefit of HR staff and management, not for the the main benefit of the staff (or the human capital). Finally I have very rarely seen any data architecture involved in HCM with the the result of HR or HCM being the least industrialised area of business, as well as that most really useful intelligence on HCM is usually done by outsiders gathering data on social media sites that were not designed or architected, but often contain more useful information.
