On Stupidity – Change

As architects we are all working on change. We are told that change is just one constant factor of life. The strange thing about change is however that the people doing the change are very change resistant. So as architects we are told by change management that we need to do change in a certain way and we usually created ontologies and artefacts in the same way and as such we are not changing. The only thing that is changing is technology and our tools. Or at least we believe it to be.

Actually technology has not really had a change for the last 30 years, but we like to repackage thing in new ways. The only things changing is an evolutionary change in terms of higher performance. Now many people think that IT and business is changing just because of the sheer amount of ever new products, but in reality they all build on technology and ideas developed in the 60s and 70s. If you are not believing this (and frankly this shows that still have a healthy and critical mind) just try to find anything really new.

So instead of change we are actually in the opposite direction. We are usually just using technology to industrialise our business. I can even proof this by pointing out that the highly industrialised areas are those that are left alone. But you may argue that industrialisation is change, which makes the argument much harder. So if change is just a different name for industrialisation then many change management should really not be about change, but instead of efficiency management. This however would mean that all the people in change management would need to look on their own inefficiencies, but they usually will not like that so the whole thing is called change to muddy the water and keep managers in work 😉
