From The Knowledge Economy

ImageA structured framework into which business information and knowledge can be dropped only provides only one of the foundational elements required of an Enterprise Architecture.

An Enterprise Architecture Framework without content provides no business no value. It must be populated.

Architecture content to be included within an Enterprise Architecture Framework must be

  • Accurate
  • Current
  • Validated
  • Approved

These attributes can be achieved by having in place a Governance Process through which all inclusions and changes to the Framework must be subject. The content included within the Framework must also be subject to review at agreed time intervals so that the user of the included content can have some level of confidence in its currency.

Governance of the information in the Framework is absolutely essential but does not, by itself provide for an Enterprise Architecture.

Content, with Governance, does provide an accurate reflection of the business. It does not provide a strong means by which the future direction of the business can be shaped.

Without Governance the Framework becomes a dumping ground for whatever someone deems should be included.

An Enterprise Architecture can only be said to exist if the Principles and Standards within the Framework have a regime of Compliance attached to them. A compliance process must include some level of mandatory behaviour which provides the capability to say ‘no’ to a proposed inclusion or change.

Whilst acknowledging that exceptions to strict adherence to Enterprise Principles and Standards may be required, the impact can be managed as part of Governance and Compliance processes. The risks brought to the business by the exceptions, once identified, can be mitigated.

A Framework plus Governance plus Compliance are all essential components of an Enterprise Architecture.
